CASE STUDIES
Krishna has got
the charm of life again
Krishna Jana, a girl of 13, was reading
in class-IV in a government primary school. She was very
interested in her studies. But she failed to get admission
in class-V as she was unable to give school admission fees.
Her parent was also not interested to give her education.
The economic condition of her family is also poor. She used
to work in a grocery shop with her father to help her family
economically. In this situation one day our social worker
of that village came to know about her. He talked with her
family and motivated them. Krishna is now reading in class-VII
at our school at Gopalchalk. She is very happy now and is
performing well at her studies. But the problem is that
we can provide her education at our school up to class-VIII
and her parents are also not willing to continue her education.
There does not exist the educational environment at her
house. It is necessary to keep her in hostel to continue
her education. Krishna will be able to stand in the life
if she gets the opportunity to complete graduation at least.
So it is necessary to help her financially so that she can
able to have nutritious food along with the study materials.
Sabita
is no more a child labor now
Sabita Rout, a 13-year-old girl of Gopalchalk
was reading in class-IV in a government primary school.
She was very keen at her studies. But she was unable to
go to high school due to the distance. Due to the poor economic
condition she used to work with her parent in brickfields.
When the teachers of Gopalchalk Sarojini Siksha Niketan
know this, they approached to her parent to send her to
school again. The local Panchayat also help them. Now Sabita
is reading at class-VI in Gopalchalk Sarojini Siksha Niketan.
She is studying now enthusiastically with her friends. But
her study may stop any day as pressure is increasing on
her to help her family economically. In this situation it
is necessary to help her financially so that she can able
to have nutritious food along with the study materials.
It is also necessary to keep her at residential school and
educate her till graduation so she may get the opportunity
to stand in life.
How
far the mother will be able to educate her son
Sujan Das, a boy of Hinchi, aged 13, is reading in class-VII
at Parulia Modern School. He is very interested in his studies.
But he lost his father at the very childhood. His mother
having no other alternative has to work at others houses
to earn the livelihood. But she is keen to educate her son.
Sujan was admitted at Saradamoyi Sishu Siksha Niketan (a
school run by KJKS). Seeing his attentiveness to studies
and keeping in mind the economic condition his fees were
halved. He stood 2nd in annual examination of class-VI and
thereafter admitted at Parulia Modern School. Neither there
exist the educational environment at his locality nor it
is possible for his mother to carry on the educational cost
at higher level. It is necessary to keep him in hostel to
continue his education. Sujan will be able to stand in the
life if he gets the opportunity to complete his graduation
at least. So it is necessary to help him financially so
that he can able to have nutritious food along with the
study materials.
The
children took initiative to repair the roads
D: Sarada Saradamoyi Sishu Siksha Niketan
(a school run by KJKS) is situated in the village D: Sarada
under Sarada GP at Contai-II Block. The school is beside
the main road. The condition of the road was deplorable.
It becomes more dangerous in the rainy season. There were
every chances of danger at any moment. But the administration
was indifferent. One day the students of and Sarada Dakshin
Palli Primary school (govt.) blocked the road in the demand
of immediate repairing. BDO Contai-II came to know this
while passing through that road and he promised the students
to make the needful at no times. And he kept his promise.
The road is now okay. People are able to go quickly and
safely through that road now.
Participation of
the children in Pulse Polio
The school Saradamoyi Sishu Siksha Niketan is situated in
the Muslim community. Due to some social taboos Muslims
are not taking pulse polio. The rate was very poor in the
previous time. In this time (14.11.2003) the students started
awareness campaigning through home visit. Slips were issued
to each family the previous day and on that day the students
go to each and every home and gave the children pulse drops.
100% success rate was achieved on that time.
Develop
Teaching Learning Materials with the Guardians
25 guardians of Saradamoyee Sishu Siksha Niketan developed
teaching learning materials with the teachers for pre-primary
level. The guardians were given the ideas earlier by the
teachers and based on those ideas they had developed the
teaching learning materials on languages, math and EVS showing
their innovativeness. It was a whole day program.
Bharati-another
form of child labor
The village Haturia is a backward one
having no facilities of modern life. Most of the people
are very poor. They have to work hard to earn their livelihood.
So about the education or awareness level. There is no astonishment
that children of this village will go out side to work as
CDW (Child Domestic Worker). This we see in the case of
Bharati, a 14-year-old girl child. Her father is an old
man who is unable to work any more. Mother is a daily labor
but due to gender discrimination and age is not getting
proper daily wages. So being unable to run the family of
five the parent sent the elder one Bharati to Medinipur,
Kolkata for work as CDW some two years ago. A neighbour
of them had made this connection. Bharati had to work from
dusk to dawn to complete all the household jobs. She rarely
got any time to take rest at the afternoon. But she didn’t
complain as she was getting Rs. 500/- month, which helped
her family economically. She used to come back once in six
months. But things became after she went from home five
months ago. The two sons of the employer started to use
her as the medium of satisfying their perverted sex desire
repeatedly when ever possible. She was so shocked and afraid
that she could not tell that to any body. This continues
till she came back. Her shocking experience has not been
over since then her mother wants to send her back there,
as she is the source of income. At this time one of our
staff came to know this incident and motivated her mother
not to send back their any more. Bharati is now a student
of our BC centre at Analberia where she is learning attentively.
She wants vocational training by which she will be able
to run her family in future. But that horrible trauma is
still vivid in her mind. Our staff there, is trying level
best to get rid her off from that traumatized incident.
Ashalata
is going to fulfil her dream
The village Kotdolbar is a backward one
having no facilities of modern life. Most of the people
belong to economically backward class. They have to work
hard to earn their livelihood. So about the education and
awareness level. It in no surprise that the children of
this village are going out side to work as CDW. So Ashalata,
a child domestic worker born. Her father is cultivator by
name. The amount of land he possesses is negligible. Besides
this he also works as daily labor. Being unable to run the
family of five the parent sent the elder daughter Ashalata
to one of the flats of CIT Road Scheme, Baguihati, Kolkata
for work as CDW some one and half years ago. A relative
of them had made this connection. Ashalata had to work from
dusk to dawn to complete all the household jobs. She rarely
got any time to take rest at the afternoon. But she didn’t
complain as she was getting Rs. 500/- month, which helped
her family economically. She used to come back once in six
months. But she was unable to bear the beatings she got
by the hands of the employer. That lady uses to beat her
off & on at slightest fault s severely. At this time
one of our staff came to know this incident when she came
home this time and motivated her parent not to send back
her any more. Ashalata is now a student of our BC centre
at Analberia where she is learning attentively. She wants
to learn VT by which she will be able to run her family
in future. But that bitter experience still vividly presents
in her mind. Our staff there is trying level best to get
rid her off from that traumatized incident.
The
curse of gambling is no more
Gambling and drinking were the common phenomena in a remote
village Baroj (South) under Baroj G.P. of Purba Medinipur
district. The common ignorant poor people were being affected
by it. The men of this area used to come and involved at
these malpractices. They went back at night to their families
and behaved ill, tortured their wives. They took out the
ornaments, rice by force and sold that to market and then
went for gambling again. As a result of this, the families
starved. Miscreant activities were increasing. In this period,
the Puspa SHG of KJKS raised an agenda in their group meeting
and took resolution to curb out the problem. They attacked
the place of gambling one day and destroyed the materials.
Panchayat helped them and decided in a meeting that gambling
and drinking would be stopped from that day.
The fact is that gambling and drinking are abolished from
this area till the day.

children among which son is the younger. She suffered from
severe poverty. Her daughter used to work in one’s
house along with her to run the family. But after the marriage
of the daughter it was almost impossible for her to carry
on the family. At that time she came in contact with the
social worker of KJKS working there and joined one SHG ‘Aasha’
on June 2001. She used to save Rs. 20/- per month among
many difficulties and thus save Rs. 590/- till now. By this
time his son becomes older. Biswarani applied for the loan
of Rs. 1500/- to her group for buying a cycle van. Her performance
at the group was good and she was granted for the loan.
Now her son earns Rs. 50/--60/- per day and gives her earnings
to his mother. Biswarani gradually gives back the loan and
her own savings also increase. She uses to have two square
meals per day and joy gradually comes in his house. She
is very happy and gives the entire credit to her SHG.

Sarathi was like other housewives of the
village Namaldiha under Amtalia G.P. of Contai-II block
in Purba Medinipur district till not she formed the SHG
‘Maa Nachinda’ in the year 2002 where she uses
to deposit Rs. 20/- pm amidst many sufferings. Now she uses
to produce sugarcane at her own land and her husband sales
the juice in the local market. She managed the cost to buy
the juice-extracting machine by taking loan from the SHG.

Subhas
finds the new stream of life
Subhas Chandra Ghorai of the village Mouhati under Khejuri-I
block of Purba Medinipur district was a marginal farmer
like all others till the year 1999. He used to get one time
crop from his land and had to fight the battle against poverty
through almost all the year. There was no facility of irrigation
for doing agricultural work throughout the year. He started
weaving, but it was not profitable enough.
In the year 1999 he came to know that KJKS is an organization
that gives training on sustainable agriculture. He digs
a pond at first for preservation of rain water and from
there made several outlets surrounding his land. By this
it was made possible for him to produce crops through out
the year using crop rotation system. He started fishery
at small scale in the pond. He also starts making nutrition
garden at his land surrounding the house. The production,
which he gets, is enough to sale at the market after fulfilling
the need of the family. Now his savings is approximately
Rs. 900/- per month on an average through out the year.

earn the livelihood for his family. He even took loan for
the marriage of his daughter and was unable to repay it.
By that time the ‘Vabistah Krishak Dal’ (Future
Farmer’s Team) of that area came and to know this

that team. Now he earns Rs. 2000/-per month on an average.

house. He now gives training to others farmer. Seeing his
success two more team is formed in that area.
